This is a website for a class that Im taking at ITT. The lesson is, I have to describe 25 IT terms in my own words.
- Information Technology: Is how a company manages and handles information.
- Personal Computer: This is a device that calculates
numbers. Those two numbers are 0, 1. That’s the only language that a computer knows. Its how it calculates those numbers
that we get data that we use.
- Needs assessment: This is a way to assess
how you understand a certain subject.
- Operating System: An operating system is a
way for you and the computer to communicate.
- High-level language versus machine language: low
level is the language that the computer understands. High-level language is a way for a programmer to write a program.
- Graphic user interface (GUI) this is what
we use everyday when we use a computer. It allows us to interact with the computer.
- Computer Network: a computer network is how
two or more computers communicate with each other to share information.
- WWW versus Internet: www stands for “Wide
Word Web” and is a system of Internet servers that uses HTML documents. The “internet” is a global network
connecting millions of computers.
- TCP/IP: stands for Transmission Control
Protocol: This is a format for transmitting data between two devices (ie: printers, drives, joysticks, internet) IP
stands for Internet Protocol this is a way for information to be sent between to computers.
- Ethernet/fast Ethernet: is a way for
sending data from your computer to another computer at rates up 10Mbs. Fast Ethernet is the same as Ethernet but transfer
data at 100Mbs.
- Bandwidths and speed: Bandwidth is
the amount of data that can be transferred in a given time. Speed is how fast
the data is transferred.
- ISP’s: This stands for “Internet
service provider” this is a provider for Internet service.
- Streaming video: This is video that is sent
over the Internet and viewed with your media player. It allows you to view a video before it is completely downloaded
- MPG: Stands for Mpeg animation. Mpeg is a form of video compression.
- AVIs: stands for “Audio Video Interleave” this is a file format for Microsoft’s video standard.
- Virtual environments: This is an imaginary
environment not a physical.
- Visual Basic: is simply a programming
language that was developed by Microsoft. It allows a programmer to create user interfaces.
- C++: is a programming language to develop
graphical applications.
- Batch files: is a way to keep a set
of commands together when it’s executed.
- Object orientated programming: is when
a programmer structures data so that you can click on an object.
- Browser: This what enables you to display
web pages. (Internet explorer, Netscape)
- HTML: Stands for Hyper Text Markup. This
is used to create document for the World Wide Web.
- Static web page: is a web page that
you can’t interact with. ex. looking for airline tickets.
- Interactive web page: Is a web page that you
can interact with (ex. Looking up airline tickets)
- URL: Uniform Resource Locator. It’s
a way to locate Items (documents, or data) on the WWW.
